Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone was able to enjoy the wonderful weather we had this weekend! I can't wait to celebrate the school's 1,000,000 minute reading goal this week! The students will have a day of celebration and can dress like the a book character. We have also started another Box Top Challenge. Please send in any box tops you can find!

Here is what's going on this week: 

Writing: We will continue to work on their informational books this week. We will focus on using the checklist to revise and edit. They will get to share their information at an Expert Fair. The Expert Fair will be March 9th. More information will be coming shortly. 

Reading: We are moving onto poetry this week! The students will learn about the different components of poetry, such as mood, tone, and figurative language.

Word Study: Their spelling tests are scheduled for Wednesday, March 2nd.

Social Studies: This week the students will be learning about the lives and struggles of pioneers. They will also begin learning about the Gold Rush and how people traveled west.

Math: The students all did amazing on the decimal test! This week we will move onto Customary Measurements. They will learn the units and how to convert the units of length, weight, and capacity.

Weekly Happenings 2/16-2/19

Hello! I hope everyone was able to enjoy another long weekend! Thank you to those who volunteered at Jump Rope for Heart!

Here is what's going on this week: 

Writing: The students are continuing to draft their informational books. We will focus on writing strong informational essays and narratives. We will also set revision goals. Their pieces should be done by Thursday, February 26th.

Reading: We will continue to research their new Revolutionary War topics. This week we will focus on using context clues to find the meaning of unknown words. Next week, we will move onto poetry!

Word Study: Their spelling tests are scheduled for tomorrow, Wednesday, February 17th.

Science: We are moving on to social studies this week. The next chapter focuses on pioneers and the Gold Rush. We will test Thursday, March 3rd.

Math: We will wrap up chapter 10 this week. I am beyond impressed with how quickly they are understanding decimals! Their test will be this Friday.

Weekly Happenings 2/8-2/12

Hello! I hope everyone was able to enjoy another weekend of great weather!

Here is what's going on this week: 

Writing: The students are continuing to draft their informational books. This week they are adding introductions and conclusions to their piece. They will also highlight important information by adding quotes to their writing.

Reading: The debate went amazing! Each student was well prepared and knew their facts! This week we will move from researching the causes of the war to researching an event during the war. We will be focusing on using text features to find the main idea.

Word Study: Their spelling tests are scheduled for Wednesday, February 17th.

Science: The students are continuing to learn about matter. This week we will focus on mixtures and solutions. At the end of this week, they will show their knowledge through matter stations. We will move to Social Studies next week.

Math: We will begin chapter 10 this week. The students will learn decimal place values. They will also learn how to read and write decimals up to the hundredths!

Weekly Happenings 2/1-2/5

Hello! I hope everyone was able to enjoy the incredible weather this weekend!

Here is what's going on this week: 

Writing: The students will be writing another informational book. They were able to choose their topics for these books. This week we will primarily work on researching, note taking, and drafting.

Reading: This week the students will finish planning for the debate. The patriots vs. loyalists debate will be on Wednesday. Then we will begin researching events during the Revolutionary War.

Word Study: The students received their new words today. Their test is scheduled for Wednesday, February 17th.

Science: We will wrap up electricity this week. The next chapter will cover what matter is and how you can measure it.

Math: We will wrap up chapter 9 this week. Their test will be this Friday. It is important they are continuing to work on their multiplication facts.
