We went on a dictionary scavenger hunt to learn the parts of a dictionary. The students also made their own scavenger hunts!

Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Here is what's happenings this week:

Writing: We are continuing to work on our informational books. This week we will continue to work on adding text features. We will also work on adding quotes from our research. I have seen some amazing work so far! Their papers will be due next Friday, March 6th.
Here are some of the possible text features to add:



Reading: This week we will continue to learn new text features and why authors choose certain features. Understanding this will help them in their reading and writing! Please encourage your child to read non-fiction books at home. 
Here are some features we have discussed so far:


Word Study: The students received their words last week. The Green and Orange group will test on Wednesday. The Purple and Blue group will test on Thursday.

Social Studies: Last week we focused on the causes of the Civil War. This week we will learn about the Civil War and how it affected Missouri. We will also begin discussing the reconstruction after the war. I am so impressed with the great discussions we've had about the causes of the war! 

Math: The chapter 10 test will be this Wednesday. Their study guides will be sent home tomorrow. We will spend Monday and Tuesday reviewing the concepts. Please help your child study for the math test. It is important they are working through problems similar to the study guide. There are many online resources through their text book to help study! If you have any questions about this, let me know!

Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: We will continue to work on the informational books about the topic of their choosing. This week we will focus on writing introductions and conclusions. We will also work on adding text feature to our pieces. Here are some charts that will help to apply these strategies. 


Reading: We are moving on from text structures to text features. We are not only looking at the different types but why authors choose certain text features over others. 

Social Studies: We will start chapter 6 this week. This chapter covers slavery and the Civil War. We will focus on how the people of Missouri were affected by these things. 

Math: This week we will continue to work on decimals. We will move into comparing and ordering decimals and solve word problems with decimals. Their test will be next Wednesday the 25th.

Valentine's Day

We had a great time sharing our Valentine's Day cards with the class!



Letters to a Pioneer

We wrote letters to a pioneer! We compared and contrasted their one room school to our school now. Surprisingly, there are still many things in common!

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend enjoying the incredible weather! I cannot wait for the week we have ahead of us!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: This week we will start the next part of our informational unit. The students will be writing another informational book. This book will be very similar to their Louisiana Purchase books, but will be over a topic of their choice! I cannot wait to see what topics they choose!

Reading: We will wrap up informational text structures this week. We will also start learning about different text features and why authors use certain features. Please encourage your child to read non-fiction at home!

Word Study: The students will take their spelling tests this week on Monday and Tuesday. Their contracts are also due on Tuesday.

Social Studies:  Due to the early release on Wednesday, their Chapter 5 test will be on Thursday. We will spend the Monday and Tuesday reviewing for the test. Please encourage your child to begin studying a couple days before the test, since there is a lot of material to learn. They will fill out their study guides on Monday.

Math: This week we will begin Chapter 10. This chapter covers decimals. We will begin by learning the different place values of decimals. We will also learn how fractions and decimals are related.
