Weekly Happenings 8.28-9.1

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! I can't believe the amazing weather we've been having!

Here is what's happenings this week:

Writing: This week the students will choose a realistic fiction story idea. They will then develop their character by thinking about internal and external traits. We will also plan the scenes in their story.

Word Study: We will spend a couple more days building relationships and practicing classroom expectations. They will get their spelling groups this week.

Social Studies: We will continue working on reading maps. We will learn about latitude and longitude. We will also review the continents and oceans. On Friday, we will make a salt map of Missouri. A flyer with all of the information you need was sent home today.

Math: We will wrap up our first chapter this week. Before the test, we will learn how to order numbers and how to round. The chapter 1 test will be this Friday. The students will get their study guide a few days prior to the test. We will go over the study guide and review for the test in class.

Reading: We have begun our first reading unit. In this unit, the students will focus primarily on interpreting characters. We will discuss character traits, look for character change, and find the theme of the story. Please make sure your child is reading at home each night. They will use their independent books to practice a lot of these new skills.

Important Dates:
8.31 - Curriculum Night, 7:00-7:30

Weekly Happenings 8.21-8.25

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! I am excited for our first full week of learning!

Here is what's happenings this week:

Writing: We will decorate our writer's notebooks tomorrow. We will also begin our first writing unit. In this unit, the students will write a realistic fiction piece.

Reading: This week we will work on the expectations during reading workshop. We will practice building our reading stamina. It is important the students are able to independently choose a just right book and stay focused on their reading for longer periods of time.

Word Study: We will use this time to continue building relationships and practicing classroom expectations. They will also take the beginning of the year spelling assessment. I will use the data from their test to form spelling groups.

Social Studies: We will begin our first unit this week. In this unit, they will learn how to gather information from different types of maps.

Math: We will spend most of this week practicing the expectations during math workshop. Thursday we will begin chapter 1. The first chapter reviews the important concepts of place value.

Important Dates:
8.31 - Curriculum Night, 7:00

Totality Awesome Day

We really did have a Totality Awesome Day!! We learned all about the solar eclipse, built a model, and made a chalk eclipse! We also watched the partial and total eclipse! Thank you to the parent volunteers!

First Day Fun!

To get to know each other better, the students spent time interviewing each person in their group. We learned many new things about our classmates and made a lot of connections!

We also went on a classroom scavenger hunt to get to know the room better. They took pictures of different places about the room.

The students worked together to build a pyramid of cups. They couldn't touch the cups with any part of their bodies. They were able to use a rubber band and string to stack their cups. It was a great way to learn how to work together!
