Weekly Happenings 4.17-4.21

Hello! I hope everyone had a great long weekend!

Here is what's happenings this week:

Writing: We are starting a new unit this week! The students will be writing a literary essay. We will spend most of this week taking notes on books to formulate a thesis statement. The students all chose a book they are familiar with.

Reading: We will spend a couple more days practicing test taking strategies. We will also be MAP testing Thursday and Friday.

Word Study: We will spend the word study time reviewing different math concepts.

Social Studies: We will learn about the Civil War and about Missouri's involvement in the war

Math: We will spend the first couple of days reviewing all of the geometry terms. The test will be on Wednesday. 

Important Dates:
4.20-4.26 - MAP testing

Weekly Happenings 4.10-4.13

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend enjoying the great weather!

Here is what's happenings this week:

Writing: We are continuing to work on poetry! This week the students will write poems that include personification. They will also practice writing haiku poems. Toward the end of the week, the students will choose a couple poems to revise and publish. These poems will go into a grade level poetry book.

Reading: We are still taking time to practice test taking strategies. This week we will focus on answering questions about non-fiction texts. We will work on text structure, main idea, and supporting details. 

Word Study: We will spend a couple more days learning different grammar rules. We will then use this time for extra math review to prepare for the MAP test.

Social Studies: We will continue studying the causes of the Civil War. We will also play an Underground Railroad virtual game. The game follows a slave who is escaping on the Underground Railroad. The students will make decisions for this character along the way. Depending on the decisions, their character may make it to freedom or be sent back to the south.

Math: We will continue to work on geometry! This week we will continue practicing how to use a protractor to measure and draw angles. We will also learn the different types of triangles and quadrilaterals. Their test will be next Wednesday.

Weekly Happenings 4.3-4.7

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend enjoying the great weather!

Here is what's happenings this week:

Writing: We are continuing to work on poetry! This week the students are writing action poems which include descriptive verbs. We will also work on incorporating rhyme schemes into their poems. They are showing a lot of creativity this unit!

Reading: With MAP test approaching, we will spend some time working on test taking strategies. The students will practice the strategies using different short texts. We will also work on various reading strategies during our small group work.

Word Study: We will spend another week learning grammar rules. We will learn about the different conjunctions and how to fix run-on sentences.

Social Studies: We are moving back to social studies! The next unit teaches students about slavery and the Civil War. We will spend a lot of time discussing the causes of the war.
Math: Our next chapters covers all of the geometry terms the kiddos need to know! This week, we will focus on lines, angles, and how to use a protractor to measure and draw angles.
