Weekly Happenings

Here's what is happening this week:

Writing: We will continue to work on their literary essays. This week we will focus on gathering pieces of evidence to support their thesis.

Reading: We will practice answering and asking questions that are within, beyond, and about the text. Within the text questions ask the students to retell or summarize the story. Beyond the text questions ask students to make inferences, predictions, and connections. About the text questions ask students to think about the author's craft, analyze the story, or critique the story.

Word Study: The students will test on Wednesday. Contracts are also due by the end of word study on Wednesday.

Social Studies: This week we are learning about our state and local government. Their government chapter test will be on Friday.

Math: The students will be working on rotational symmetry projects. They will create figures that show rotational symmetry.

Our Constitution

Today we learned about the Constitution. We showed different opinions on school matters using our First Amendment rights. The students made petitions, newspaper articles, signs, and speeches to express their opinions.

Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! I am so proud of the student's hard work during testing last week! Every single student put forth their best effort both days!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: We began our last writing unit today! The students will be writing a literary essay. They will ultimately develop a thesis about a text and support it with evidence from the text. This week the students will be focusing on developing big ideas about texts. They will look for patterns that they can support throughout the text. 


Reading: The students got their new book club books today. They will meet on Thursday to discuss the first section of reading. We will also work on the difference between retelling and summarizing. 

Word Study: The students received their new words today. Their contracts will be due next Wednesday. They will also test Wednesday.

Science: We are finishing up the chapter on speed and motion. This week we will review and test on Wednesday. The students already have their study guides. After the test, we will go back to social studies.

Math: We will spend this week reviewing for the math test on Friday. The math test will assess them on Geometry as well as area and perimeter. Their study guides will be going home tomorrow.

Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! MAP testing begins this week! We will test Wednesday and Thursday.

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: We are going to continue working on poetry this week. We will also begin to analyze poetry to help them write stronger poems.

Reading: We are going to continue practicing close reading and answering questions after listening to a passage. They will also preform with their book clubs on Wednesday.

Science: We will continue learning about motion and speed.

Math: This week we will wrap up our geometry chapter. We will also do some MAP training to help the students prepare for how the test will look. We will test over this chapter next week.

Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone had a great long weekend! The students all had some great stories to share about their weekends! Also, thank you to all of those who donated box tops! Our class collected over 1,000!!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: We will continue to work on poetry this week. The students have been working on creating poems that convey a certain mood. They are also working on creating poems using different tones. We will also continue to work on using figurative language to create strong imagery. The students will begin publishing their poetry on the computers this week as well.

Reading: We will continue using close reading to practice a variety of different reading strategies this week. The students will also be working in their book clubs to create a final project.  Some groups are working on skits, posters, or plays to wrap up their books.

Science: This week we began chapter 10 which covers force and motion. We will discuss how an object's mass affects the force needed to move the object. We will also talk about the speed of objects.

Math: We are still plugging away with geometry! The students are doing very well so far! We learned to measure and draw angles. We will also learn about the different types of triangles and quadrilaterals.

Math Workshop

The students are rigorously working on creating geometric figures with yarn, completing fact fluency puzzles, and finding the fraction and decimal of colored jelly beans they have.
