Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving! I cannot wait to hear all about the student's long weekend!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: I am so impressed with the planning the students have done for their essays so far! This week we will work on making decisions for which pieces of evidence to include in their essays and how to organize those pieces. We will also will be writing introductions and conclusion paragraphs for our essay.

Reading: We will continue working on using story elements to summarize fiction texts.
Please encourage your child to summarize the part of the text they read for their nightly homework.

Word Study: The students will be working on different sorts with their words. Their next test is tentatively scheduled for December 11th and 12th.

Science: This week we will continue to learn about the three types of rocks and how each of those rocks are formed. We will also study how weathering and erosion affect the Earth.

Math: This week we will continue to work on long division.  We will spend some time reviewing the long division steps. We will also be solving word problems using division. The students will need to interpret the remainder to answer the word problems.

Weekly Happenings!

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! We had a great week last week celebrating the students' Blue Ribbon success! With Thanksgiving coming up, this week is only a two day week! I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: We are continuing to work on our essays. The students have been creating stories to support their bullet reasons. This week they will learn how to create lists that also support their bullet reasons. We will also begin sorting through all of our evidence to decide which pieces are best to include.

Reading: We will finish the Princess and the Pizza. We have been using story elements to help make predictions. We will also use those story elements to summarize the text. As you read at home ask your child to tell you who the main characters are, what the setting is, and to describe the plot in a few sentences.

Word Study: All groups will test today! They will get their new words tomorrow. Their next test is tentatively scheduled for December 11th and 12th.

Science: This week we will be learning about the different types of rocks and how they are formed. We will be making flip books to help learn about the three different types!


Math: We will be learning the traditional algorithm for long division today! Please continue working on multiplication and division facts at home!

Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! I cannot believe we had snow already! We have a busy week this week learning and celebrating the students amazing achievement during Blue Ribbon Week. The students have a lot to celebrate! Also, thank you for all the Adopt-a-Family supplies! We exceeded our goal of 100 already! Please continue bringing in any supplies you have to donate. This week's theme is cleaning supplies, however, you can bring in any item! 


Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: We are continuing to work on opinion pieces. Last week the students chose their thesis statements. This week we will focus on ways to support our thesis statements. We will use the strategy of Boxes and Bullets.





























































Reading:This week we will be focusing on story elements and summarizing. We will be using books by Patricia Polacco to identify story elements and summarize. Please encourage your child to read a variety of genres at home to help them become better thinkers as they read.

Word Study: All groups will test Monday, November 24. Their contracts will be due on that date as well.


Math: After a great unit on multiplication, the students are ready to start division! This week we will be focusing on the basis of division. We will be using models and manipulatives to aid in this process. We will also be working on estimating quotients using compatible numbers. Instead of simply rounding, the students will use their knowledge of multiplication facts to find compatible numbers that are divisible by the divisor. Please continue to work with your child on their multiplication facts.


Science: After a great unit over the Louisiana Purchase, we are moving on to science.  Chapter 5 covers rocks, minerals, weathering and erosion. This week we will be focusing on minerals and rocks. We will be doing a virtual lab to identify different minerals by their properties!

The students led an amazing Veteran's Day assembly. They read poems, introduced guests, and sang songs!

Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! Thank you to those of you who brought in money or food for Adopt-A-Family last week! We set a goal to collect 100 items and we are already at 94 items! We will reach our goal in no time!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: This week we will be working on developing opinion essays. The students will work on generating essay ideas and work on elaborating those ideas using thinking prompts.

Reading: In reading we will continue to focus on forming summaries of both fiction and non-fiction books.  Please continue to ask your children to summarize what they read during their ten minutes of reading.

Word Study: Due to some changes in our schedule last week, the students will be getting new words today. Their tests will be tentatively scheduled for November 24.

Social Studies: This week we are reviewing the Louisiana Purchase. They will test on Thursday. They have their study guides with them, and we will work on filling them out together today.

Math: We will continue working on multiplication. We will learn how to solve multi-step word problems and use tables to help solve problems. The math test will be this Friday, November 14.

Lewis and Clark

The students learned a ton about Lewis and Clark last week from Mrs. Jardon! 

Kids Voting

Tuesday the students participated in Kids Voting. They were given a ballot in the library and made their own decisions!

Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope you all had a great Halloween Weekend! The Fall Festival was a success, and the students had a ton of fun! Also, thank you all for coming to conferences. It was great getting to discuss the wonderful things about your child! 
This week we are back to another full week of learning! 

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: This week we are starting opinion essays. We will be learning the structure of essays and begin thinking about our topics. I am excited to see what topics they come up with!
Here is the basic structure of their essays. 

Reading: This week we will be wrapping up inferring. We will also start working on summarizing texts. Please encourage your child to give a short summary after their ten minutes of reading.

Word Study: Their word study contracts are due Thursday, October 6. Purple and Green groups will test this Wednesday. Blue and Orange groups will test this Thursday.

Social Studies: Mrs. Jardon will be here this week to teach the students all they need to know about the Louisiana Purchase! She is an expert and has a lot of interesting information to share!

Math: We are starting chapter 5 this week. Chapter 5 covers two-digit by two-digit multiplication. Please continue practicing multiplication facts with your child!
