Weekly Happenings

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! I cannot believe we had snow already! We have a busy week this week learning and celebrating the students amazing achievement during Blue Ribbon Week. The students have a lot to celebrate! Also, thank you for all the Adopt-a-Family supplies! We exceeded our goal of 100 already! Please continue bringing in any supplies you have to donate. This week's theme is cleaning supplies, however, you can bring in any item!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: We are continuing to work on opinion pieces. Last week the students chose their thesis statements. This week we will focus on ways to support our thesis statements. We will use the strategy of Boxes and Bullets.

Reading:This week we will be focusing on story elements and summarizing. We will be using books by Patricia Polacco to identify story elements and summarize. Please encourage your child to read a variety of genres at home to help them become better thinkers as they read.

Word Study: All groups will test Monday, November 24. Their contracts will be due on that date as well.

Math: After a great unit on multiplication, the students are ready to start division! This week we will be focusing on the basis of division. We will be using models and manipulatives to aid in this process. We will also be working on estimating quotients using compatible numbers. Instead of simply rounding, the students will use their knowledge of multiplication facts to find compatible numbers that are divisible by the divisor. Please continue to work with your child on their multiplication facts.

Science: After a great unit over the Louisiana Purchase, we are moving on to science.  Chapter 5 covers rocks, minerals, weathering and erosion. This week we will be focusing on minerals and rocks. We will be doing a virtual lab to identify different minerals by their properties!
