Weekly Happenings 2.26-3.2

Hello! I hope everyone had a great weekend! It was nice to finally see the sun :)

The schedule will look a little different this week. We have a Lewis and Clark expert coming to teach the students about the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark expedition. She will come to our class from 2:10-3:10 each day this week. She has a ton of valuable and interesting information to share with the kiddos! Because of this, we will need to squeeze some reading in during the morning.

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: The students will continue to take notes and draft their informational books. They will work on adding introductions and conclusions to their writing. They will also learn how to add quotes to their writing.

Word Study/Science: On Wednesday, we will finish the last rotation of science stations. During the other days this week, reading will be moved to this block of time.

Math: We will continue chapter 11 this week. The students will learn the different customary measurements for capacity and weight. They will also learn how to convert these measurements. It is important the students continue working on their multiplication facts. Converting involves a lot of multiplication and division! It makes it a lot easier if they know their facts.

Reading:  We will continue to work on a variety of non-fiction reading skills in their guided reading groups. Some skills we will focus on are summarizing, finding the author's purpose, finding evidence to support their thinking and finding the point of view.  We will also hit some fiction skills as well, such as theme, character traits, and drawing conclusions. Please make sure your child is still reading at least 20 minutes each night.

Important Dates:
2.27 - Mother/Son Dance
2.28 - Spring Pictures
3.9 - Half Day
3.15 - Parent Teacher Conferences
3.16 - Half Day

Science Stations

The students are hard at work in their science stations! To better understand how electric circuits work, the students will work in different stations. They will test objects to see if they are insulators or conductors, create circuits using the Snap Circuit boards, test a variety of different circuits to determine if they are open or closed, and revisit how static electricity works.
