Weekly Happenings 2.20-2.23

Hello! I hope everyone had a great long weekend!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: Today, the students made a plan for their next informational books. Many students are writing about a specific animal, sport, athlete or weather event. They will need to decide how to organize their notes. We will spend this week note taking and drafting.

Word Study: Their tests will be Wednesday, February 21. We will move back to grammar on Thursday. We'll work on a variety of grammar concepts.

Science: We will spend this week learning how electric circuits work. They will learn how electricity flows in a circuit and the different parts needed in a circuit. They will also learn the difference between insulators and conductors. On Thursday, the students will begin different electricity stations.

Math: We will review for the math test this week. Their chapter 10 test will be this Thursday. Study guides were completed today. On Friday, we will begin chapter 11. Chapter 11 teaches the students the different customary measurements. They will also learn how to convert those measurements.

Reading:  We will continue to work on a variety of non-fiction reading skills in their guided reading groups. Some skills we will focus on are summarizing, finding the author's purpose, finding evidence to support their thinking and finding the point of view.  We will also hit some fiction skills as well, such as theme, character traits, and drawing conclusions. Please make sure your child is still reading at least 20 minutes each night.
