Weekly Happenings!

Hello! I hope everyone has had a great start to the week! We have a lot coming up in the next few weeks, so it is really important the students are keeping up with their homework!

Here is what's happening this week:

Writing: We are continuing to work on our personal narrative stories. This week we are focusing on revising our leads and endings. Their narratives will be due next Wednesday.

Reading: This week we are focusing on making inferences. We are using the text "Just a Dream" by Chris Van Allsburg to make inferences. We are also continuing to work on distinguishing a prediction from an inference. Encourage your child to make predictions and inferences as they read at home.

Word study: The class received new words on Monday. Due to many things being due next week, their tests will not be until November 5th and 6th. Their spelling contracts will be due on the 6th.

Social studies: This week, we started chapter 4. Chapter four covers Europeans coming to Missouri. This week we mostly learned about the French settling in Missouri. We will also start learning about the Louisiana Purchase.

Math: This week we have been learning different strategies to use when we are multiplying. All of these strategies help the algorithm make sense. Often students make errors using the algorithm, because it does not make sense to them; they are just following the procedure. Now that the students have a better understanding, we will learn the traditional algorithm for multiplying with regrouping. We will also learn how to multiply a one-digit number by three- and four-digit numbers.
The test will be next Wednesday.

Please let me know if you have any questions!
